This is a piece I did for Creighton Alumni Magazine. The article is Titled “is Democracy in crisis” it’s about the declining popularity of democracy around the globe. My favorite part of this is that the black cracked edges of the pillars are all democratic countries. Can’t take credit for this, it was Art Director Michael Artman’s brilliant idea. I have a second piece from this magazine I will post next. Thanks. #illustration #editorialillustration #art #democracy
Had a crazy week of deadlines last week but now I can share some stuff. Here is a piece I did for the January issue of Indianapolis Monthly about the tech companies migrating to Indianapolis. Shout out to the Design Director Todd Urban! Thank you. #editorial #editorialillustration #art
Here is a piece I did at the end of last year for Barron’s Magazine about how the new tax plan is going to effect day traders. #editorialillustration #illustration #art #taxseason
This is a book cover I did last year for a friend who wrote a hilarious book about his childhood in Fresno where I grew up. Had so much fun working on this one. Love the title also, Great job Robert! Here you can see some process photos: rough concept, inked final, color study, final book. #bookcover #illustration #art
This is a recent commission I did for a friend. I really love how it turned out. My portfolio was updated recently and I put this is as the first image since it really sets the tone for the rest of the work. curtmerlo.com or click the link in the bio to check out my latest work. I have also included some process photos here so you can see the many iterations from jumbled mess of horse manure to finished piece. Thanks! #illustration #art #americana anyone have hashtag ideas I feel like I need better ones.
This one was inspired by the Disney Fox merger. Run! The conglomerate is coming for you! #illustration #comics
I have been meaning to share this for like a year. One of my older illustrations was used as the cover for a documentary about the flint water crisis. Documentary by @CedricALTaylor. Haven’t seen it but it looks interesting.
This is spread panel of an idea for a story I have been thinking about. Thought I would share exactly what I am doing right now and not some project I finished a week ago like I normally do. Nice day!
This was the last piece I did in 2017. It was for @washingtonpost outlook cover about the various scandals that have haunted the Whitehouse. Thanks to AD @chrisrukan for the great art direction. This was his idea and it rocks. Thanks #editorialillustration #illustration #washingtonpost #art
Here is a the Holiday card I made for some of my clients this year. Sorry if I missed any of you but deadlines kept me busy... Soooo it’s your fault is what I am saying. Thanks for a great year everyone! #illustration #holidaycard #seasonsgreetings
The thing I am most proud of in my career so far has been having a monthly illustration for the Beat column of the Indianapolis Monthly for the last two years. This is one of my recent favorite about a film festival that the leadership is trying to take in different directions. Thank you DD Todd Urban for giving me this amazing opportunity! #editorialillustration #illustration #art #indianapolismonthly
If you haven’t already check out @ryanheshka s new book Fatales (on Amazon I believe). It’s an impressive body of work and extremely inspirational in the most creative way. This guy gets it. Thanks Ryan!
Here is part two of my instagram micro comic. Check out part one first if you haven’t already. Thanks! #comics #webcomics #slime #illustration
I made a micro comic for you Instagram. You can see part two of my very short story on my next post! Thanks! #slime #webcomic #comic #illustration
This piece ran in the Minneapolis @startribune on Sunday about the people of China’s economic growth. My favorite line from the article “...when histories of our time are written 100 years from now I strongly suspect that the main topic of discussion will not be the US deficits, taxes, nor health insurance... instead our history will see our era defined by the extortionate economic rise of China.” Sobering to think about that. Also look how crappy my concept sketch is, it’s amazing they approved anything. Shout out to AD Kim Vu. Thank you! #illustration #editorialillustration #art #chinaeconomy
